Allergic Rhinitis

September 21, 2020

Allergic rhinitis which is commonly referred to as hay fever is a disease caused by allergens and leads to an allergic reaction in people. Nearly 20 - 30 % of the Indian population suffers from allergic rhinitis. Most common causes include the inhaling of allergens like dust, pollen, mold or animal dander. In the last few years, there has been a drastic increase in the cases of allergic rhinitis in our country. This is because of the lifestyle changes in people and high pollution. The condition is commonly seen in people between ages 18-25. If the condition is seen in older people it has to be immediately tended to. The most common symptoms include nasal obstruction, sneeze, cough, itchy nose, sore throat, watery eyes and fatigue.

These symptoms might present themselves during direct exposure to allergens. The condition might worsen if the person is constantly exposed to the allergen or has a history of asthma. Diagnosis for Allergic rhinitis includes a skin prick test where the allergen is injected into your skin and noted for reactions, RAST test to determine the level of allergic substances and blood count test.

Treatment for Allergic rhinitis include Antihistamines to stop histamines, Nasal Sprays & Decongestants to relieve stuffy nose and eye drops to relieve itching. In the case of severe allergies, the ENT would recommend immunotherapy to the patient. The best way to have your Allergic rhinitis in check is to stay away from the allergen that is causing it. A few changes in your lifestyle can make a huge difference in handling the condition.
