Avoiding headset induced hearing loss

May 03, 2021

Though the definition of headsets may vary, we’re using this as a collective term for both headphones and earphones.

Here are 3 tips to prevent hearing loss while using headsets

1. Follow the 60/60 rule: Listen to audio at 60% of the device’s volume and take a 5-minute break after 60 minutes. But when is the audio too loud? If the volume of speech has to be increased to address the other person, then the audio is too loud and the device volume must be reduced.

2. Use noise-cancelling headphones: Many people turn up the volume to combat the loud ambient noise.

But this can cause damage to the ears in the long run. And it can be  prevented by investing in a good pair of noise-cancellation headphones so that it’s possible to listen to audio at a lower volume without having to compensate for the loud noises outside.

3. Avoid earphones: Earphones or earbuds (ex. Air Pods) are devices that sit inside the ear. Headphones are devices that sit outside the ear. To prevent long-term hearing loss, invest in a good pair of headphones as opposed to earbuds or earphones. It might seem like an insignificant change but it makes a huge difference to the ears in the long run.
