Avoiding Hearing Loss

March 08, 2021

Progressive hearing impairment is common among the elderly of today. Following some simple lifestyle modifications plays a crucial role in curbing the onset of hearing loss.

  • Avoiding prolonged exposure to loud noises such as construction sounds, traffic and loud music gives the ears time to recuperate and protects the inner and middle ear against chronic stress, that can potentially lead to hearing impairment.
  • Using noise cancelling headphones, in lieu of conventional earphones and headphones minimizes the irritation of the ear caused by the presence of ambient noise.
  • In the case of continuous exposure to loud sounds (like a rock concert) , the ears should be given a minimum of 18 hours to recover between consecutive exposures
  • Earmuffs and earplugs must be worn we a person operates heavy machinery. If possible people working around the machinery should stay as far as possible from the source of noise.
  • If a person experiences hearing loss because of wax build-up or any other issue, they should consult an ENT specialist. Self-medication and treatment (e.g., using ear buds) should be avoided as it can worsen the condition and potentially damage the ear drum.
  • If a person feels like they are experiencing hearing loss or is exposed to loud sounds on a daily basis, he or she should undergo hearing tests to ensure the efficiency of hearing. Early detection and treatment of hearing impairment prevents the worsening of the condition.

Good hearing and delaying the onset of hearing loss lies in your hands!
