Hearing loss in India
May 10, 2020
Hearing loss means loss of the partial or full hearing ability of a person. In India, 60% of the people who endure hearing loss suffer in silence. The WHO in 2018 released that 6.3% of the country is affected by some form of auditory loss. Research also states that the person with an early onset of hearing loss is seen isolating themselves and is seen to be depressive to a level of needing psychological counselling. This is because hearing loss hits like a storm and leaves the person clueless about how to tackle the economic and social impact it causes in a developing nation such as ours.
The government of India has taken several initiatives to aid the people with hearing loss. The signing with the UN Convention for the Rights of People with Disability is a step taken to bring positive changes in the lives of people with hearing loss. Even this being the case, it is absolutely in the hands of the person suffering and his family to take the steps necessary for betterment. The common causes of hearing loss in the country include congenital hearing loss, genetic/inherited hearing loss and hearing loss due to old age. Technology and science in the country have seen to grow exponentially in the last few years. Several hearing aids and implants are available in India for the assistance of people with hearing loss. Early detection is necessary to set the person on a journey towards healing both physically and mentally.
