Hearing Loss: Myths and Facts on Devices to Overcome Hearing Loss

If you or a loved one are experiencing permanent or profound hearing loss, it is quite likely that your ENT specialist may have recommended either hearing aids or cochlear implants in a bid to help alleviate the hearing loss.

 While these two devices are priceless in helping patients, they aren’t used owing to some myths surrounding them. Here, we demystify some of those myths.

Myth 1: Hearing Aids / Cochlear Implants are Heavy and Ugly

 Fact: Hearing aids, that are so small that they are barely visible are now available in the market. These can barely be seen. While cochlear implants are a little bigger, they aren’t heavy too!

Myth 2: If Your Hearing Loss is Mild, Aids / Implants Can Wait

 Fact: Many people wrongly believe that they need to be completely healing impaired to use hearing aids and cochlear implants. However, this is not the case at all! The earlier the implant is used, the better it is for the user. Instead of suddenly experiencing hearing loss and needing aid, the person will be able to gradually able to adapt to the aid if used early.

 Myth 3: Sounds Seem Louder / More Uncomfortable With A Hearing Aid / Cochlear implant

 Fact: Gone are the days when hearing aids were uncomfortable as they magnified the sound considerably. The hearing aids of today and better calibrated to suit the needs of the wearer. They even have a tune-up/tune down button to help the user adjust the volume. Additionally, in the case of cochlear implants, these are specifically calibrated to help patients and do not amplify sound unnecessarily.
