Living with Tinnitus : Control the Ringing

Do you hear constant ringing sounds in the ear even when there is no source producing the sound?

One among every twenty people, at any given point of time experiences hearing constant ringing or buzzing sounds in their ear. This condition known as tinnitus, can be very annoying and sometimes even frustrating!

While tinnitus by itself isn't harmful, it can indicate the presence of other conditions (in the ear and other organs) and definitely needs to be checked and treated by a doctor. Sometimes, tinnitus is an early sign of impending hearing loss that can be treated or stopped from progressing if treated early.

Tinnitus can be cured is some cases; however, many people may have to live with tinnitus in the long run.

Here are some effective coping mechanisms to help alleviate the disturbance caused by tinnitus :

  • Excessive consumption of caffeine in the form of coffee or tea can worsen tinnitus in the long run. Limiting the consumption of these beverages to a maximum of 1 or 2 glasses a day helps in preventing the tinnitus from getting worse.
  • Anxiety and Stress are trigger factors that can cause or make tinnitus worse. If you experience tinnitus frequently, it is imperative that you keep anxiety at bay by being mindful and partaking in activities that relieve stress.
  • Being well rested and having a minimum of 6 of hours of sound sleep on a daily basis can prevent tinnitus from exacerbating.

Tinnitus can be managed, and people can live a good quality life with tinnitus provided some lifestyle modifications are made post consulting an ENT specialist.
