Throat Infection

August 04, 2022

A sore throat is a frequent complaint that can be caused by a variety of diseases. Though it normally improves with time, there are a few things you may do to relieve throat pain and symptoms. If the sore throat continues to exist, then it can lead to throat infections.

Cause of throat infection –

Viruses are the major cause behind throat infections. Most commonly, one of the viruses that cause the common cold, such as rhinovirus, adenovirus, influenza virus, or respiratory syncytial virus, is to blame.

Symptoms of throat infection –

A throat infection causes considerable pain during swallowing and, in most cases, speaking. The discomfort is felt in the ears as well for many patients. Some people develop a fever, headache, and stomach trouble. Tonsils are red and swollen, with white patches on them at times. Neck lymph nodes also become swollen and painful.

Diagnoses of throat infection –

A throat infection is diagnosed by examining the throat. However, because viral and bacterial illnesses frequently have the same appearance in the throat, doctors cannot tell whether the cause is a viral or bacterial infection simply by looking at the throat. People with a runny nose and cough, on the other hand, are more likely to have a viral illness.

Treatment for throat infections –

While a sore throat normally heals on its own, strep throat necessitates antibiotic treatment.

  1. Pain killers (analgesics)
  2. Antibiotics as prescribed by doctors
  3. Tonsil removal surgery if required

People who have had multiple streptococcal tonsil infections may need to have their tonsils removed (tonsillectomy) surgically.
