Types of Hearing Loss

It can be caused due to aging, noise, infections, chemicals, genetics, and autoimmune attacks. However, it is essential to know that not every hearing impediment is the same.

Types of hearing loss

The type of hearing loss is dependent on which part of the hearing is impaired (i.e. the external, inner or middle part of the ear). The main types of losses include sensorineural, conductive, and mixed hearing loss

1. Sensorineural hearing loss: The most commonly found hearing loss, sensorineural loss results due to damage in the inner fiber cells and ear nerves. Some common causes for it include noise damage and aging. It is extremely tough to correct sensorineural loss but can be treated via hearing aids. 
2. Conductive hearing loss: Caused due to tumors, fluids, earwax, and ear formation, conductive hearing loss leads to obstructions either in the middle or the outer ear. In conductive hearing loss, sound is barred from reaching the inner ear. Usually, it can be treated with medicine or via surgery. 
3. Mixed hearing loss: As the name suggests, this type of loss is a mixture of the first two above-mentioned kinds of hearing impairment. 

Audiologists determine the kind of hearing loss before prescribing the treatment or commencing with the surgery. The treatment is also based on the degree of hearing loss, which can range from mild and moderate to severe and profound
